The originality in the use of materials for the #MiesPavilion lies not in their novelty but in the ideal of modernity they expressed through the rigor of their geometry, the precision of their pieces, and the clarity of their assembly.

So far ahead of his time: way back in 1936, Modernist master Richard Neutra designed this home for Joseph Kun, a native of Hungary and publisher of the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. The Hollywood Hills home was one of the first "all-electric" houses in Los Angeles. The antique 1930s-era cars look wildly out of place next to the architecture that still looks modern today.

In 1964, architect Richard Neutra designed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses in Los Angeles for a developer who supervised the construction. Because of poor construction techniques, the Neutra office disavowed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses. Thirty years later, in 1994, the Northridge earthquake revealed the hazards of these structural faults when three houses became unmoored from their foundations and tumbled down the hillside.

The multi-building Toronto–Dominion Centre was built in the mid-1960s and is considered an icon of rationalist Modernism. Mies van der Rohe's refined, minimalist design was a declaration of grandeur and marked Toronto’s arrival on the world stage.

Zibo OCT Art Center, designed by Studio Zhu-Pei, is a cultural hub in Zibo, Shandong, China, inspired by the traditional Chinese "Heyuan" layout. This contemporary interpretation features a central courtyard surrounded by multiple buildings, fostering community engagement and cultural exchange.
The permeable, overhanging eaves and annular form reflect local cultural identity and address regional climatic conditions. The courtyard hosts gatherings and semi-outdoor activities, while the tactile roughness of concrete roofs and masonry stone walls enhances its regional relevance. This design creates dynamic, column-free spaces that encourage immersive experiences.

Habitat 67, a pioneering residential project designed by Safdie Architects in Montréal, set a transformative precedent for urban housing with its modular prefabrication approach. Initially created as the centerpiece for the 1967 Montreal World Exposition, this project aimed to integrate the spatial qualities of suburban living into a high-density urban context. Comprising 365 prefabricated modules, Habitat 67 forms 158 unique residences, each featuring private roof gardens and open spaces, merging suburban amenities with urban convenience. Despite facing challenges related to scaling and costs, Habitat 67 has remained an architectural icon, significantly influencing global design trends and continuing to be a celebrated residential complex.

Does anyone do better rooflines than William Kessler? This futuristic building at Michigan's Olivet College was designed in the early 1960s. Kessler is one of the lesser-known 20th century modernists, but his beautiful work, mostly in and around Michigan, is getting renewed attention in the last few years.

The Noisy-le-Grand Car Park in Noisy-le-Grand, France, is a dramatic testament to brutalist architecture. Designed with imposing concrete forms and striking geometric patterns, the car park transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a sculptural icon in the suburban landscape. The raw, unadorned concrete emphasizes the structure's industrial aesthetic, creating a bold visual dialogue with its surroundings. This building not only meets the practical needs of parking but also serves as a piece of public art, reflecting the innovative spirit of its time.

The McGregor Memorial Conference Center is a Modernist office building in Midtown Detroit. Completed in 1958, the building was the first commission of the Japanese-American architect Minoru Yamasaki that marked his shift from International Style architecture to a style known as the New Formalism. The ACROS Fukuoka project by Emilio Ambasz offers a compelling answer by merging urban development with lush greenery. This unique agro-urban model fulfills both the developer's need for profitability and the public's desire for open green spaces. The north facade presents a sleek urban exterior, while the south side extends a park into a series of terraced gardens, topped with a stunning belvedere overlooking the harbor. Under these terraces lies a multifunctional space with an exhibition hall, theater, offices, and retail areas, ensuring the building serves diverse community needs.
.
Emilio Ambasz masterfully balanced the commercial and public interests in Fukuoka's last large undeveloped plot. His design maximizes income potential for developers while doubling the adjacent Tenjin Central Park's size. The building steps up in terraced gardens, offering serene spaces for city dwellers and acting as a natural sound barrier. Reflecting pools and a glass atrium bring light and tranquility indoors. The facade on the financial street features angled glass floors, creating an awning effect and enhancing the urban landscape. This design ensures the park and building are intertwined, giving back the land it occupies and creating a harmonious urban space.

Located in the the Hollywood Hills, the Chemosphere is a Modernist house designed by John Lautner in 1960. The flying-saucer shaped building, which the Encyclopedia Britannica once called "the most modern house in the world" is admired both for the ingenuity of its solution to its "unbuildable" site and for its unique octagonal design.

In the late 1950s, Eero Saarinen designed the John Deere headquarters in Illinois, where this basement-level record-keeping space is a gridded study in minimalist precision. Each custom-designed desk seems to hover weightlessly on a central pillar, instead of standing on four legs. A hallmark of the era are the manual typewriters and ashtrays on each desk.

The Johnson Wax Headquarters, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1939 in Racine, Wisconsin, stands as a masterpiece of modern architecture. Notable for its "Great Workroom," the building features innovative dendriform columns that resemble lily pads, supporting a light-filled open space.
Constructed using materials like Pyrex glass tubing, concrete, and brick, Wright incorporated natural light and organic forms, emphasizing his philosophy of organic architecture. The building, along with its adjoining 1950 research tower, has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark since 1976, underscoring its significant impact on architectural design.

Maison Bordeaux le Pecq, designed by Claude Parent between 1963 and 1965, is a modernist gem located in Bois-le-Roy, Normandy. This unique house exemplifies Parent’s “fonction oblique” theory, featuring sloping roofs and minimal walls to allow space to dominate. The single-story home includes a reception area, mezzanine study/library, master suite, three bedrooms, and additional facilities. Set on 3.5 hectares, it offers views of the countryside, a tennis court, and is just 90 km from Paris.
