We love this Bauhaus-era police school, built in Berlin circa 1931. The industrial-functionalist design by architect Conrad Beckmann is perfectly complemented by Marcel Breuer's tubular chrome furniture.

Bauhaus-trained architect Marcel Breuer designed the library at St. John's University in the 1950s. Massive concrete structures support the coffered ceiling in the reading room. We also love Breuer's custom-designed tables with built-in lighting panels.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with Students at the Bauhaus, Berlin (credits to: Harvard Art Museums/Busch-Reisinger Museum, Gift of Howard Dearstyne)
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the foremost figures in modernist architecture, played a crucial role in the history of the Bauhaus. In 1930, he became the last director of the Bauhaus, succeeding Hannes Meyer. Under his leadership, the Bauhaus faced increasing political pressure and financial difficulties, but Mies van der Rohe remained committed to the school's mission of integrating art, craft, and technology.
Mies van der Rohe emphasized architectural clarity, simplicity, and functionality, principles that were integral to the Bauhaus philosophy. He promoted the idea that architecture should serve society and reflect modern industrial advancements. He restructured the Bauhaus curriculum to focus more on architecture and industrial design, ensuring that students were prepared for practical work in a rapidly industrializing world. During his tenure, the Bauhaus faced significant political opposition from the ****** regime, which viewed its modernist ideals and progressive politics with suspicion. Despite these challenges, Mies van der Rohe strived to maintain the school's independence and academic integrity.

In 1962, Bauhaus-trained architect Marcel Breuer designed the Brutalist-style Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Building in Washington, D.C. The recessed square window openings create patterns of light and shadow that shift as the sun moves across the sky during the day.
