Joshua Beck and Joana Gomes founded co-lab in 2010 in Los Angeles. In 2013, the studio moved to Tulum. For them, design is a ******* ulative process, not a product of "genius sketches".

Joshua Beck has 26 years of experience in the field of architecture and building combined. He was also a trained wooden boat builder and a skilled craftsman. Joana Gomes graduated in architecture from the University of Porto (FAUP) in 2005 and joined Rotterdam-based architecture firm MVRDV as a designer in 2006. They are inspired by the natural beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula and the studio aspires to connect indivuals with Nature through their design projects, blending the built environment with the surrounding landscape. The studio is committed to sustainable design principles and works with locally sourced natural materials, resulting in spaces that are harmonious with their environment.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with Students at the Bauhaus, Berlin (credits to: Harvard Art Museums/Busch-Reisinger Museum, Gift of Howard Dearstyne)

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the foremost figures in modernist architecture, played a crucial role in the history of the Bauhaus. In 1930, he became the last director of the Bauhaus, succeeding Hannes Meyer. Under his leadership, the Bauhaus faced increasing political pressure and financial difficulties, but Mies van der Rohe remained committed to the school's mission of integrating art, craft, and technology.

Mies van der Rohe emphasized architectural clarity, simplicity, and functionality, principles that were integral to the Bauhaus philosophy. He promoted the idea that architecture should serve society and reflect modern industrial advancements. He restructured the Bauhaus curriculum to focus more on architecture and industrial design, ensuring that students were prepared for practical work in a rapidly industrializing world. During his tenure, the Bauhaus faced significant political opposition from the ****** regime, which viewed its modernist ideals and progressive politics with suspicion. Despite these challenges, Mies van der Rohe strived to maintain the school's independence and academic integrity.

The Tower of Shadows, a modernist masterpiece designed by Le Corbusier in the 1950s in India, serves as a pivotal study on solar movements. This structure embodies Le Corbusier's theory that sunlight can be controlled within a building's four corners, allowing for the manipulation of light and temperature even in warmer climates. Crafted from concrete, the open pavilion design meticulously traces the sun's path, casting intricate shadows both inside and outside, demonstrating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic design.

Vietnamese practice Tropical Space completes the Terra Cotta Workshop in Dien Phuong as a winding complex shaped by brick walls. The project emerges from an existing makerspace preserved for more than two decades and enlivened today with two long folded walls and a circular wall surrounding the original brick kiln. Prior to intervention, the architects observed the craftsmen’s daily activities unfold like clockwork, inspiring them to design the new workshop based on the process of observing light, wind direction, footsteps, sitting position, walking style, and how to turn to find the appropriate source of light to make sculptural works. All these activities are condensed and arranged into basic geometric spaces.
