In 1964, architect Richard Neutra designed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses in Los Angeles for a developer who supervised the construction. Because of poor construction techniques, the Neutra office disavowed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses. Thirty years later, in 1994, the Northridge earthquake revealed the hazards of these structural faults when three houses became unmoored from their foundations and tumbled down the hillside.

One of southern California's most prominent modernist architecture firms was A.C. Martin, who designed the 1965 Ivy Lawn Memorial Park Building in Ventura.
