So far ahead of his time: way back in 1936, Modernist master Richard Neutra designed this home for Joseph Kun, a native of Hungary and publisher of the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. The Hollywood Hills home was one of the first "all-electric" houses in Los Angeles. The antique 1930s-era cars look wildly out of place next to the architecture that still looks modern today.

In 1964, architect Richard Neutra designed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses in Los Angeles for a developer who supervised the construction. Because of poor construction techniques, the Neutra office disavowed the Stone-Fisher Platform Houses. Thirty years later, in 1994, the Northridge earthquake revealed the hazards of these structural faults when three houses became unmoored from their foundations and tumbled down the hillside.

Does anyone do better rooflines than William Kessler? This futuristic building at Michigan's Olivet College was designed in the early 1960s. Kessler is one of the lesser-known 20th century modernists, but his beautiful work, mostly in and around Michigan, is getting renewed attention in the last few years.
