Winding deck beneath the fabric canopies

Bóng Gió Pavilion

Bóng Gió, a Vietnamese phrase for shade and wind, is a temporary pavilion built in a city park for the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2026. It takes a patch of ground under old trees and adds two things to it: somewhere to sit, and a moving roof of coloured light.

A low deck winds between the trunks in loose curves, splitting and rejoining around islands of grass. It is made from ordinary construction timber, the rough boards normally used as formwork for concrete. It sits only a little above the ground, so people use its edges as benches, lie on it or simply walk along it. The trees stay where they were, and the deck bends to pass around them.

Above, long strips of translucent orange fabric are stretched between the trees at different heights and angles. They are tied rather than framed, so the wind lifts and twists them. Sunlight passing through warms the shade, and the colour slides across the deck and across people’s faces as the cloth moves.
