Good Morning Saigon

On Nguyen Hue Boulevard in Ho Chi Minh City, a21studĩo completed Good Morning Saigon in 2015 as a mobile stall for everyday goods. The project revisits a street-vending culture that once made the boulevard a place for neighbors to meet.

The boulevard began as a canal connecting the Saigon River with the old citadel. Over time it became a flower street and pedestrian promenade, while many small vendors gave way to larger shops and cafés.

The cart combines a wheeled serving stand with an inverted traditional boat as its canopy. The form recalls boats that once moved through the city and boat-shaped covers used on long-distance trucks in the 1950s to provide shade.

Designed to sell coffee, food, newspapers, fruit and flowers, the stand brings familiar street goods back into the public realm. Its mobility allows it to serve different locations rather than depend on a fixed shopfront.

Old timber, a reused boat and reinforcing steel form the cart, with locally available materials guiding its construction. The proposal was not approved for mass deployment, but its design imagines a small, adaptable presence moving through the city.
